Who can join this course:

This course is open to both those who may feel they have limited experience on the sewing machine, and for those who have a lot of experience. If you are an absolute beginner, we could work with that, but please inform the reception at the time of booking.

Course description

During this course we will aim to complete a variety of items that we can enjoy in the home or can be gifted. We will start with a quilted table runner which may involve some new techniques for some sewers and may not be new to others. We are also likely to consider making fabric baskets in our second session. Project ideas for the last two sessions can be discussed within the group, we could make bunting, some patchwork placements, or oven gloves for example. None of these projects are out of the reach for beginner sewers, and there are some techniques that accomplished sewers can take on board to further their experience.

What students need to bring

A basic sewing kit, which may include some threads for sewing machine, fabric scissors a tape measure, a ruler, some pins and a fabric marker pen recommended but not essential.

There are a number of sewing machines available, however bringing your own machine to the sessions is preferable in order to get to know your machine better.

Fabric - A metre and a half of your chosen fabric can be brought to the first session, although some fabric will be available. The wadding for the quilted table runner will also be provided. Subsequent sessions will involve the student bringing their own fabric should they wish and all these requirements will be discussed at the end of each session. There will never be a requirement to spend a lot of money on supplies for the  projects, and if the student is happy with the choice of material that the tutor has, then fabric will be provided for free, or for a small donation towards Coastal Community Learning.
